Thank God It's Friday!

A half day on Friday (due to Professional Development) was the perfect way to start off last weekend and any weekend, if you’re being honest. For the most part, you could find the members of Winslow House spending quality time with each other and the rest of the boarding community as they hung out around campus or signed out to Hillside, Fairway, or Downtown.

Just returning from their exciting outtrips, Grade 10’s were welcomed back from their five-day adventures. With a range of emotions from admiration to resentment, everyone was just happy to be home (and be able to shower). Starting this week, Winslow will be sending off a large population of the house, the Grade 11’s, along with a few Grade 12 Outdoor Leaders, for their outtrips. Hopefully they will come back with a plethora of stories to share, some outdoor skills that can be put to use in the future, and new friendships created along the way.

This past Saturday night, the Victoria Royals played the Prince George Cougars in the first opening weekend series in the Western Hockey League. Members of Winslow who chose to go received front-row seats at the Save on Foods Memorial Centre downtown to a huge victory for the Royals. However, Winslow was not the only boarding house who attended. Students from each boarding house came out to see the hockey game, some having never seen one before, which allowed them to try something new, while connecting with the other members of the community.

On Sunday, new boarders experienced their first ever House Chapel from Timmis House. The theme of their chapel was empowerment, concerning the controversial issue of feminism, and it included the reading of a poem called “Fear of the Word” and the singing of the song “Beautiful”by Christina Aguilera. This chapel session inspired deep thought about things that we don’t normally think about, a beautiful sentiment that allowed for pause in the busy life of a SMUSdent.
