ABOUT

There are six houses at SMUS: three boys houses and three girls houses. You will become a member of one of the houses when you start your journey at SMUS.

Winslow is one the girls' houses. It will be your place of residence and your loving, supportive community throughout your time here.

Who was Winslow?

F.E. Winslow is the only person of whom a house is named that was not a headmaster or founder. He was, however, a great friend of the school, and as chair of the board helped steer University School through difficult times during the 1930s financial crisis (he retired from the position of chair in 1958!). A direct descendant of one of the Mayflower passengers, sadly his own son Frederick - a school alumnus - was killed in a training accident during the Second World War.

Our House Parents:

You will live down the hall from adults at SMUS called houseparents. The Senior and Assistant Senior Houseparents live in their own apartments connected to each boarding house.

Almost all houseparents are members of staff, providing continuity between your life in and out of the classroom. At SMUS, being a houseparent is a chosen role. This means it is not an obligation to them but something they enjoy doing.

Meet the team

Mrs. Jackson

Mrs. Jackson is the Senior Houseparent in Winslow, and lives in the house with her husband Zyoji, her three children (Malia, Theo and Poppy ) and her cat. This is her thirteenth year in boarding, and her ninth year as Senior of Winslow House.  In addition to her work in boarding, she is a personal counsellor at the Senior School.

Mrs. Riley Doland

Mrs. Doland and her husband Brady (Mr. Doland) and their three year old daughter, Kaya, and 6 month old son, Levi, live on the third floor of Winslow House. It is Mrs. Doland's 10th year in boarding and third year as the Winslow Senior Assistant. Born and raised in Calgary, moved to Victoria in 2010 to complete her Varsity Track and Field career and begin the adventure of becoming a teacher. Mrs. Doland spent her first year teaching a family with four children as they travelled all over Europe, before settling into her career as a Grade 6 Math and Science Teacher at the SMUS Middle School.  Her husband, Mr. Doland, teaches P.E. at the Senior School, and fun fact, they are Middle School sweet hearts! They both have a love for travel and look forward to adventuring the world once the pandemic is over.

Ms. Williams

Ms. Williams is entering her 12th year in boarding, and has been teaching at SMUS for 29 years. As well as being a Winslow house parent she is also the school's Head of Music, teaching the Senior School Orchestral Strings Program and is the director of the SMUS Vocal Jazz Ensemble.

When not teaching and house parenting she likes to go adventuring in her 1991 camper van "Baxter".

She is also very active in Victoria's musical theatre community, music directing and/or performing in shows around town. Her son, Brin, is a touring musician, and whenever possible she can be found groovin' to the music at his concerts.

Ms. Emmett

Ms. Emmett has been in boarding since 2017 and lives next to SMUS with her partner, Mr. McCloskey (a houseparent in Barnacle House), and their dog, Tsuga. Ms. Emmett was born and raised in Victoria, BC. and loves spending time outside, camping, kayaking, hiking and doing yoga. She has a degree in Child and Youth Care and has spent many years working with children, youth and families doing therapeutic adventure and adaptive recreation. She is currently working on completing her master’s in counselling psychology. More recently, she has worked as a youth and family counsellor, a doula and youth worker. She loves to travel, and her adventures have taken her to Australia, France, Mexico, Costa Rica and the United States, with many more countries on her list of places to explore.

Ms. Lindsey Doland

This is Ms. Doland's second year as a SMUS Houseparent and first year as a Winslow Panther! She also recently joined the University Counselling/ Academic Advising team at the Senior School. She grew up in a small town in Alberta and loves exploring and being active in the beautiful outdoors hiking, kayaking, camping, and skiing.

Ms. Doland has had the privilege of traveling to 49 counties so far and is hoping to add her 50th once the travel bans from Co-vid 19 have lifted. She earned my first degree in International Development at the University of Calgary where she also played five years of post-secondary varsity volleyball for the Dinos.

Upon graduating from UofC she lived in Rwanda and volunteered as an English teacher and midwife’s assistant for disenfranchised women before moving back to Calgary to earn her Education degree and help coach a women’s college volleyball team. Since then she has worked as a PE and Leadership teacher in Calgary, as well as a University Counsellor and ELL teacher in Macau, China. She is very excited to be part of this amazing community and can’t wait to work in Winslow house alongside her 8-month old Labradoodle puppy, Leo. She feels incredibly lucky to be part of such a wonderful team and have the opportunity to build meaningful relationships with the wonderful Winslow girls.

Ms. Coll

Ms. Meg Coll is so excited to be joining the Winslow House team as a House Parent this year. This is her first year working in boarding at SMUS, but she has enjoyed working with youth of all ages for the past 16 years.

Having grown up north of Toronto, ON, Ms. Coll is Canadian through and through. She has danced forever and has enjoyed camp for as long as she can remember. One of her first jobs was as a camp counsellor at St. Andrew's College, a  "rival" CAIS School in Aurora, ON. She went to Western University for her undergraduate degree in Psychology, as well as her Education and Masters Degrees. She loved living in London ON and feels some similarities between the familial small city vibe of London and Victoria.

Ms. Coll is a performer at heart and has danced since she was 4 years old. She even took a year off to dance on a cruise ship! On top of her job teaching Gr. 8 and working in Learning Resources, she teaches YOGA and cannot wait to share that with the House and community!

Finally, Ms. Coll is engaged to Barnacle House Parent, Mr. Bryant Hollingworth...so she will soon be sister to Mr. Tom Hollingworth and Director Keith Driscoll!

She cannot wait to support you through your year and is looking forward to all the connection time and activities.
